Cryptocurrency Mining Halted in New York State

New York is the first state in the nation to formally put a halt to cryptocurrency mining.

Governor Hochul has signed a moratorium bill. It will pause for two years all new and renewed air permits for fossil fuel power plants that power cryptocurrency mining.

And the Department of Environmental Conservation will study the climate impacts of the industry.

Supporters call it a first-in-the-nation law that should set an example for every other state.

But the state Business Council says doesn't believe the legislature should seek to categorically limit the growth and expansion of any business in New York.
