New Yorkers are being encouraged to enroll in a new emergency and weather alert system to receive real-time updates directly on their phones. By texting their county of residence to 333111, residents can receive alerts from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) without any cost. The system is compatible with all cellular carriers, ensuring broad accessibility.

According to New York State's official website, the alert system is designed to keep residents informed about severe weather and other emergencies in their area. The program is private, with no tracking or monitoring of personal data by the state. Residents already signed up for NY-ALERT do not need to re-register, as they will receive the same notifications.

The DHSES emphasizes that this alert system is an additional tool to help New Yorkers stay safe during emergencies. It is part of the state's ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and preparedness.
