Police across New York State are ramping up their efforts to combat dangerous driving as part of the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. This initiative, announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, will see increased patrols and checkpoints targeting impaired and reckless drivers through Labor Day (September 1). The campaign aims to ensure road safety during the busy holiday weekend.
During last year's campaign, law enforcement officers issued over 20,000 tickets for vehicle and traffic law violations, including more than 4,300 for speeding and 966 for drug or alcohol-impaired driving. New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James emphasized the importance of removing intoxicated and drug-impaired drivers from the roads to prevent senseless tragedies. He stated, "We want everyone to enjoy the final few weeks of summer but ask that they are enjoyed responsibly."
Governor Hochul and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner, Mark J.F. Schroeder, have urged drivers to plan ahead and avoid driving under the influence. The "Have a Plan" app, available for Apple, Android, and Windows smartphones, is recommended to help drivers arrange safe transportation options.
The campaign includes the use of both marked and unmarked vehicles to conduct sobriety tests and enforce traffic laws. Motorists are also reminded to adhere to the State's Move Over Law, which requires drivers to slow down and move over for vehicles stopped along the roadway.
